You want to start a cake business. You want to become your own boss and call the shots. You want to follow your foodie passion and have the freedom to create the life you want. Creating a profitable cake business takes hard work, passion and a drive to succeed.
But it is perfectly achievable.
You can be a mum, a business owner and super proud that you earn your own income. Whether you want a cupcake business, a brownie business, a tearooms, a biscuit business or any other food business. It all starts with the desire to achieve something, and then work out what your options are.
So what are you options for starting a cake business:
Start a business from scratch
Starting from scratch is a fantastic way to start a business. If you have a burning vision, a desire to become self-employed, and you’re determined to make it happen. This is the route for you. You don’t have to have it all figured out from day one, though I do advise you start with a basic business plan.
“You want to turn nothing into something”
This is the route I took when I launched the Vanilla Pod Bakery back in 2009. From my initial idea to creating beautiful cakes and turning over thousands of pounds every year. It has been, and continues to be the most amazing journey. I am not going to say it has always been easy. There have been many highs and lows. But life as an cake business owner gives you the choice of freedom and to dictate how you want your life to be.
And just because you start a business from scratch doesn’t mean you have to do it all by yourself. Granted you can do that. You can figure out all the challenges, wear every single business hat (accountant, marketer, pr, sales, IT..etc), and bounce ideas around with yourself. But you can also get help. You can outsource certain parts of your business, you can join support groups, you can add a partner, you can employ a mentor or business coach. Ultimately you call the shots on everything to do with your business. And remember there will always be people willing to help you and your dreams.
Go down the license route
If you like the idea of creating a baking or food business but want to work under the umbrella of a larger company. Then a licensing “business opportunity” could be the perfect way for you to become self employed. A license is a simple business agreement. Where one company pays another for the use of an idea, name, logo or design aesthetic.
The Homebaked Gift Company is one such business that offers licensing. Essential you buy a business in a box and become one of the team. It is extremely simple to set up. This business model gives you the flexibility of running the business on your own terms (you can add more products and tweak recipes) but you also have the ongoing support of a larger company.
If you are interested in this type of business model then Complete Business Opportunities is a great place to start your search for potential license opportunities.
How about a franchise
Franchising is similar to the licensing model. Though franchising is often seen as a faster route to market. As to put it simply, you buying straight into a business model that that has a recongised name and a proven tract record of being effective.
Franchising is often considerable more expensive than a licensing, and you must follow the business plan eaxctly. If you want any changes then you have to get these approved by head office. However, within this model you receive a lot of business support and most franchises do everything possible to help their franchisees become successful.
If you want to go down this route then have a search on Franchise Direct or Franchise Sales for bakery or food based franchise options.
Buying an existing cake business
Buying an existing cake business is another option whether it is a home cake business or a stand alone shop. There are many reasons why business owners want to sell their businesses from moving onto new ventures, ill health, retirement or re locating. This type of agreement could be the perfect way for you to enter the cake market or help you to expand your current cake/food offering.
To see what type of cake businesses are currently for sale search through Right Biz, Business For Sale or Daltons Business.
